Description

The risk of local floodings due to heavy rains is increasing in the Netherlands. How can we encourage and engage citizens to take action? Together with Amsterdam Rainproof, an Amsterdam based collective for sustainable water management, we will design solutions and gain awareness for this issue.

User scene assignment

In the first week of our project we got to know each other’s abilities by doing a user scene assignment. Within three days, we defined a target group after doing some research and we made a small video, that we presented on Tuesday. The video can also be found on the MediaLAB youtube channel.

We first did some research about Amsterdam Rainproof, heavy rainfall, floods in Amsterdam, climate change. After that  read some news articles about heavy rainfall events and floodings in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Then we combined this information and searched for pictures that explained the impact of these floodings.

Secondly, we developed three possible target groups (personas): (international) students, elderly people and families. In a collage we combined the impacts of floods with the personas and found out how they could be affected by heavy rainfall.

We carried out four possible storylines and choose the one that we liked the most: a combination of horror and comedy. The style we choose was the style of the Dutch commercials of Centraal beheer Achmea.

The target group we selected for this video was a family, because most families own homes and everybody can easily relate to a family. We might get another target group for the official assignment, when we will do more research.

Then it was time to get started, we drew the pictures and digitalised them with illustrator. After that, we animated them into a video and mixed the animation with sounds we found online.
