Description

The risk of local floodings due to heavy rains is increasing in the Netherlands. How can we encourage and engage citizens to take action? Together with Amsterdam Rainproof, an Amsterdam based collective for sustainable water management, we will design solutions and gain awareness for this issue.

Getting started

Hi everyone,

welcome on the blog of the Rainproof team! On this blog, we will give you an overview of our project, our findings and our experiences. Since this is our first post, we would like to introduce ourselves and tell you a bit more about the project we are going to do.

This is us:

Dymphie

dymphie

My name is Dymphie am a 21-year-old geography student from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.  In my masters, next year, I would like to specialise in hydrology (water science). During the waterproof citizens project, I will be working on the research part and I will edit the blog posts before they go online.

Waterproof citizens

During our internships at MediaLAB Amsterdam, we will work on the waterproof citizens project. The waterproof citizens project is a project from Amsterdam Rainproof, which is a network of organisations. Their main goal is to make and plan Amsterdam Rainproof for now and for the future. Since heavy rainfall, like the storm on the 28th of July in 2014, might occur more in the future due to climate change. The impacts of heavy rainfall are higher in the city than outside the city, because most of the surface in the city is made of concrete, which prevents infiltration.

Some pictures of the rainfall of the 28th of July 2014 in Amsterdam that went viral.

Our task at the MediaLAB is to use our interdisciplinary knowledge in a creative way and to help finding a way to raise awareness about the effects of heavy rainfall. We also want to give them insight in the value of their efforts over the long term. In our next post, we will tell you about the first assignment we did, a user scene presentation.
