Quality assesment

The coming four months it is our quest to integrate smart eyewear into the quality assessment of the maintenance of the public space in the Port of Amsterdam. The maintenance is done by third parties hired by the Port of Amsterdam. These third parties are responsible for tasks such as: cleaning roads, cleaning traffic signs, emptying trash cans, repairing benches, removing graffiti and posters, and maintaining the lawns. But how can the Port of Amsterdam assure that the port looks its best?

This is achieved by checking the work of the third parties. Analysts of the Port of Amsterdam check if the port is clean. The analysts use an app that guides them trough the process. This process consists of grading every possible situation in a ‘sub area’ of the port. When the grading is done, the analyst sends this checklist for the sub area. If the app then asks the analyst to take a picture of a situation, it means that the third party responsible for that situation failed to keep that particular area clean. This could result in a fine, if the contractor fails to right his wrong in a set time.

Besides monthly checks, the analysts also do daily checks. This process entails reporting unusual and sometimes dangerous situations. A wrong or wrongly placed traffic sign could have terrible consequences for example. By reporting these cases to the contractors, the analysts make sure that the port remains a clean and safe place.

It is in these processes that we have to integrate smart eyewear. In this journey we stumbled upon a couple of questions. The most important question: How? We will try to answer this in our project. For now we have some ideas how smart eyewear can support the analyst. You can read more about this in future blogposts!
