Commissioner: Amsterdam Rainproof

Description

The risk of local floodings due to heavy rains is increasing in the Netherlands. How can we encourage and engage citizens to take action? Together with Amsterdam Rainproof, an Amsterdam based collective for sustainable water management, we will design solutions and gain awareness for this issue.

Rainproof occupying the MediaLAB! – the Office tour

Ok, we are not totally occupying the office, only for four days a week, and only one corner. However, we will try to put our concepts on all our walls to create the “rainproof” corner in the MediaLAB office.  So we will give you a quick tour through the office and our newly developed concepts.

We are, as you might know at the Amstelcampus of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences). We work in the Studio, a small office where the master Urban Management, the minor Entrepeneurship and the MediaLAB Amsterdam are situtated. We always work in one corner of the office, next to the ESA (European Space Agency) team.

At the back you might see some posters hanging on the walls, those are our newly developed concepts.

Our wall

Our wall

We put our time schedule and our scrum goals there, and the infographic we made for the first sprint and an infographic made by Amsterdam Rainproof. Above the posters, we put all our concepts. We developed five of them. After the translate session, that is tomorrow, we will choose two of them.  The concepts will both get a prototype, that we will test during the third sprint.

New Lake

New Lake

New Lake is a crowdsourcing platform where the community creates, shares and develops ideas. Besides the community working together, there is a private part where the creators work together with professionals to realise ideas to make their neighbourhood, street or house greener, more sustainable or more rainproof.

Raincatchers

Raincatchers

Raincatchers offers a service, with which residents of a neighborhood can buy or rent rainproofing measures, as for example a barrel for rainwater. Raincatchers picks up the collected water and uses it to create local products that are sold in the neigbourhood and at festivals in the neigbourhood.

Weather you like it or not

Weather you like it or not

Weather you like it or not is a family board game that can be played with 2 – 6 players. The goals of the game is to invest properties and protect them by installing rainproof measures. The player that is the richest wins the game at the end.

Raingers!

Raingers!

Raingers! is a digital game, which could be played at an event by 2 to 4 players. The goal of the games is to make players work together on protecting their properties from heavy rainfall and all the problems that come with it.

The Rain Run

The Rain Run

The Rain Run is organised once a year (preferably in the summer). It will be a running event in the rain. Runners run from different locations to one endpoint in the city. There will be an event at the end of the run with information about rainproof and goods from the Raincatchers.
