Description

Emotion in Design – Design across Cultures – The First Steps

A project that collaborates Kyushu University and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

We pitched at the Fukuoka City Science Museum for multiple times with different stakeholders. We have participated in multiple workshops and we would like to share those results below, so please have a read and enjoy. We will introduce the project and our team in this article.

The Project Kick-Off

So our project is framed as Emotion in Design, as in we will use emotions as a guideline in our designs to create a better future for the Fukuoka City Science Museum. This will be created by our team of different cultural backgrounds, that hopefully will compose a glorified solution for all parties involved, which brings us to the Inclusive Design philosophy that is also incorporated into our upcoming concepts thanks to the lectures and workshops given by Hirai sensei. We will go more into detail and share knowledge about Universal Design and Inclusive Design in the future. Do you already know what these terms mean?

The Team Introduction

So the team is composed of four people. Two of Dutch nationality, two of Japanese nationality. The team has a strong grip on design methods as all of us understand the basic means of design. Do you know the basic means of design? [Tune in next week to find the answer!]

We feel gifted to have a common understanding and we mix English and Japanese language and we use a lot of visual sketching to express our feelings. We have joined the DxC VR Medialab 4 Triple Slack group and are aiming to have a closer relationship with the team in Amsterdam. [Would you want to join our Slack?]

We hope to get to know you too as we open ourselves to the world, so please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Design across Cultures

In order to collaborate on a global scale, we have to understand each other in means of an universal language. Everyone comes to a different conclusion based on their own perspective, and it is in the spirit to try and translate this into the same language despite having cultural dissimilarities.

We hope you will enjoy reading through our project. Expect during the project to atleast see one post of updates every week. Though the quality might differ, it should be interesting to read!

‘Finding an emotional connection between things, services and people is very important to what we as designers do – or what we should be doing’
