Business Method Toolkit

Start and grow your own business. Develop a strategy and create impact with the Business Method Toolkit – a curated collection of more than 25 business methods perfect for lean, agile environments and multidisciplinary teams.

The methods divided into five categories build a fundamental knowledge to create a business. Indications on time, requirements and benefits to help plan and to chose the perfect method. Define a strategy, monitor impact and validate insights for your startup or existing business.

The methods form a common language in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams and projects. Share, translate, document and validate insights. The toolkit inspires to think beyond the usual methods, it helps monitoring processes and makes them transparent. Detailed task descriptions help to divide and assign tasks between team members.
The Business method toolkit is available in printed and online versions.

Onderwijsconferentie 2014

The MediaLAB provided this year’s visual design of the education conference. The theme of the conference was Excellence. MediaLAB created engagement among students and staff to think about this topic, and join the conversations around the conference.

Preceding the conference, participants(students and staff) were challenged to excite their excellence; to be engaged in excellence-promoting, self-improvement activities, and experience what “excellence” might mean for employees and students. These activities generated a very large variety of possible perspectives of the discussion, even the more unorthodox. Small challenges – to be executed in between regular work and study tasks – were posted to a Facebook group. Such as: “Find an item you are planning to throw away and repurpose it for your (grand)parents’ home.” These challenges call upon participants to step outside their comfort zone in surprising ways, and to show in which ways they are able to self-consciously engage with the theme of excellence.

The challenges are based on the five profile attributes HvA has described as characteristics of excellence; interdisciplinary teamwork, innovativity, craftsmanship, drivenness and reflective ability.

Participants were asked to document their experiences through reports, photos, videos, gifs etc. This documentation was used as input to visually support the morning session of the conference and to collect stimulating quotes from the HvA population to show the breadth and depth of opinions that live across the organisation.

During the conference, the MediaLAB set up a photo booth and presentation of the clashes raises at the entrance of Carré. In the photo booth the visitors got a chance to capture their own vision of excellence on film to be shown upon entrance to the theater.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Students of MediaLAB Amsterdam pitched a project idea for the Amsterdam Light Festival BeamLab pitch this fall, to present a projection mapping project on the Mozes and Aaronkerk on Amsterdam’s Waterloo square. The idea for The Dark Side of Amsterdam was one of the 7 chosen concepts that were allowed to present during Amsterdam Light Festival in collaboration with BeamSystems.

The Dark Side of Amsterdam is an interactive installation that was presented for 3 days on the market square. Passersby and visitors were asked to reflect on their sins. Users would then choose custom made glow-in-the-dark glasses that corresponded with their worst sin, and were asked to enter ‘the confession booth’ where a semi-anonymous long exposure portrait was taken. The portraits were projected onto the church instantly, accompanied by visuals that depict a sin, such as brothels and sex club signs to go with the sin ‘lust’. 410 people visited the installation and lust is (still?) Amsterdam’s most favourite sin.

The Dark Side of Amsterdam won the audience award at Beamlab #32
