Developer for the position of Assistant Researcher at MediaLAB Amsterdam (Fulltime)

About the position

As Assistant Researcher (or HOIO, a Dutch abbreviation for “higher education researcher in training”) you will work on various creative projects at the MediaLAB Amsterdam. Amongst your duties are: consulting on any programming issues within our projects and advising on languages to use for a specific goal or application. You are able to draw from your own coding experience in various languages and you are up to speed on recent developments in natural language processing research. You will help research teams develop the code for their creative solutions.

Your responsibilities are: ensuring quality of the code that is being developed in the MediaLAB and helping the student teams document and archive their code on GitHub. You initiate technical quality tests and execute them in collaboration with our assigners and partners, and will discuss the outcomes with the MediaLAB researchers. You will act as administrator of the MediaLAB’s Virtual Machines.

You are encouraged to initiate your own research project in correspondence with the MediaLAB’s research agenda.

We are looking for….

A (soon to be) recent graduate with plans to start an MA or PhD course in 2014 on a subject related to MediaLAB’s research interests. Your communication skills are excellent, you are proficient in spoken and written English. You can demonstrate evidence of a strong interest in interactive installations and their implementation across different domains.

You are proficient in several programming languages including, Java, Javascript, PHP and Python and you are experienced in qualitative and quantitative data analysis. You are interested in improving your empirical research skills.

About us…

MediaLAB Amsterdam is a research lab within CREATE IT Applied Research; the knowledge institute of the domain Media, Creation and Information at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. At CREATE IT. Professors, students and researchers conduct practice-based research with partners and assigners from the Amsterdam creative industry and IT sector. We collaborate with other universities and knowledge institutes. Our research results feed into professional practices and into our educational programs. Our practice-based research answers the urgent and relevant questions emerging from developments in the industry, ensures that education keeps pace with these developments and stimulates professionalisation of students and teaching staff.

The MediaLAB Amsterdam facilitates an intensive 20 week program to guide final year students through a full-fledged design process of researching, creating and designing, up to the delivery of a working prototype. The student teams take on innovation challenges formulated together with partners from the industry. MediaLAB also initiates its own research projects. Currently our research interests center around: interactive public screens, smart cities, data visualisation, quantified self, (serious) gaming, webapps and media installations.

What we offer

The position is one of “researcher/educational staff 3” within the University’s job classification structure. The monthly gross salary is max. € 2.256,- based on fulltime employment. The position is temporary employment for the duration of one year, starting on October 1st, 2013. The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences has excellent benefits, including holiday entitlement and an extra month.
