Description

Sprint 5

The sprint goal for this sprint was:

By building and testing a high-fi prototype which exists of an application and a screen, we are going to test the usability

After we chose which concept were going to work on, were going to build this into a high-fi prototype. Within this sprint we had different interviews with experts. One of them was with a colleague of Mijksenaar. Mijskenaar designed the icons in Schiphol Airport. Another interview was with someone who works within the department passenger services. She gave some very interesting recommendations about the content were going to show.

By designing, coding and creating we built the concept. In the end of this sprint we tested the concept in a simulated context.

Sprint 4

This sprint we had a mini sprint goal until the brainstorm session. After that we created a sprint goal until the end of sprint 4:

 MINI SPRINT GOAL:
We are going to prepare a brainstorm session about our concept, using “raw” insights filtered by our criteria’s, in order to know what the concept would look like on a bigger scope.

SPRINT GOAL :
We want to further develop the concept by creating a mid fi prototype that is testable at the review session, and get feedback from experts on it.
After the test from previous sprint we got some very interesting results. Some of these results we had to integrate in our process. Therefore we held a new brainstorm about these insights. We came up with a very interesting new concept. This concept we presented to the stakeholders during the translate session. Though, we felt like there was missing something in the concept. Therefore we had a new brainstorm session, with the feedback in mind.

Based on that brainstorm we had two concepts to show at the review session. At this review session an expert, graduated on a master in persuasive design, attended. After the review session we had to choose one of the concepts to work further with. Based on the feedback we got, we chose to work with a combination of the concepts.
In the next sprint we are going to create a high fi prototype and test this prototype.

Sprint 2 & 3: Summarization

“Due to very busy sprints the last couple of weeks, it has been a long time since we last updated our blog.  We will therefore highlight some of our important steps of the project in a summary.

Sprint 2
Our sprint goal was:

“We are going to do more field research to see if our assumptions match the reality and based on this we are going to choose a user and create a concept to relieve their frictions while still keeping the sprint 1 concept in mind.”

To reach our sprint goal we had a tour at the security area at Schiphol Airport with the floor manager of the security area from Schiphol. This tour helped us getting a clear view of this area and how the process works.

We conducted field research by creating a cultural probe. A cultural probe provides way of gathering information about people and their activities. To really get to know our user we made an ‘Emotional Journey’ of the passengers in the security waiting area. We asked the passengers to draw a circle around the strength of the emotion they felt when they were at a specific touch point.
After getting feedback from the translate session, we decided to take more time to look into our insights in order to get more quality data, so we would understand the problem and the user’s pains better.

Therefore we changed our first sprint goal and focused more on choosing a target user.
At the end of sprint 2 we decided to focus on the leisure traveller and made a user profile based on field research, observation and gathered information.

Sprint3
Our goal for sprint 3 was:
“We want to conduct more in-depth research through creating one concept that relieves one friction for the leisure traveller by building an intervention that we can test in the field.”

On the 5th and the 7th of April we interviewed passengers in the waiting area. We held two interviews to gather information about meaningful time and about the provided information in the waiting area.

In these two interviews we received interesting information which showed us what those passengers found most important and valuable. Later in the sprint we turned the gathered information into useful insights.
Through our observations and interviews we gained some knowledge about the pain points and frictions of a couple of passengers and thereafter chose one friction that we wanted to work further with and brainstorm upon.
For the brainstorm session every member of the team brainstormed individually to come up with three concepts that they later would pitch for the rest of the team.
Based on the pitches of the team members and feedback from our stakeholders we decided to focus on one concept.
We turned the concept into a low-fi prototype and did a small test in the actual security waiting area.”

Peer Pitches & Review

To reach our sprint goal we had to make a prototype based on our concept. Based on the feedback from the translate session, we elaborated the concept.  We worked on two tangible prototypes.

During the peer pitches we did an experiment with the peers from MediaLAB to give a clear feeling of our problem.  From our peers we got different kind of feedback points, that we took into account before the review session.

At the review session different stakeholders were involved. We told them about the feedback we got from our peers and ask them what their ideas were about the concept to take with us in the next sprint.

Full of new motivation we’re beginning our new sprint!

Translate Session

Wednesday 24th February we met with different stakeholders for a Translate session. We explained our process of the last week. We told them about the research, frictions, target audience, brainstorm sessions and showed our two concepts. The stakeholders gave some recommendations and advice. They were very happy and enthusiastic about one of the concepts. Until the end of this sprint we are going to elaborate this concept and make a tangible prototype.

It was a very valuable and meaningful day!

Brainstorm & Conceptualization

After setting our sprint goals we started with the desk research. We chose our target audience as the “frequent flyer”. This is the economic traveller who flies often. We looked at the characteristics, frictions, emotions  and gains of the frequent flyer. We decided which friction we wanted to relieve to get more specific in our concept.

With these insights we started a brainstorm. We used different kind of methods. First method was the C-sketch. In this brainstorm method you have to draw three concepts in 15 minutes. Then, everyone had 5 minutes to make some additions to the concept of the others.

The second method is called crisis thinking. We build up two scenarios and based on the these scenarios we came up with different solutions. It is a good and fun way to think out of the box.

We voted for the two best concepts. We therefore divided our team in two and worked on these different concepts.

Sprint : Ideation and planning session + Skype Call Japan

This Monday 9.30 we started with the Skype call to Japan. The first introduction was very nice and we are looking forward to the collaboration with the Japan Team!

The planning session and ideation.

Two of our stakeholders were involved in our meeting. They gave their ideas of what they think was important for our planning. We took these ideas with us in the brainstorm. Out of the brainstorm session we build up our sprint goal.

Our sprint goal for the next three weeks:

“Create a prototype that shows a concept based on the excisting data around the waiting lines at Schiphol Airport in order to relieve one current friction.”

We build up our goals and choose the matching methods. For that we used the Design Methods Toolkit and methods that some of the team members has used in previous work.

At the end of our sprint, as a minimum viable product, we want to build:

“A psychical testable prototype”

Meeting at Schiphol The Grounds

Our first meeting at Schiphol  was a big success!
We met the partner at The Grounds. The Grounds is an innovating workingspace, that Schiphol facilitate.
After a coffee and a walk in the sun we were introduced to the background of The Grounds, Schiphol Airport and our project.

The guidelines for the Schiphol project and the challenges that they are facing, regarding the waiting lines, became much clearer to us.

User Scene Assignment

Our first assignment was to make a user scene. After we set up our main goal and subgoals, we started to think about the different users of our project. From desk research we build up our assumptions and gave our view. We made a collage and build two personas.  We detailed the storyboard and started filming.

Take a look at our result:

“We all have to wait, but we experience it differently. Let’s make waiting a moment where time flies!”
